What list are you referring to? To compress a folder in 2000 you open windows explorer, right click on the folder and click on Properties, on the General tab click on the Advanced button. On the lower half of the window that opens you get the option to compress. I'm not 100% sure offhand but you may not be able to use 2000 compression on a non NTFS partition. If your partition isn't NTFS and the "compress" option isn't available you may have to convert to NTFS first.
