Well, if you're both running 2000 and he's running server edition he could set up a VPN connection via RRAS. Otherwise he'd have to allow file sharing on his PC and create a share and password protect it, and you could access it by mapping a drive to \\[friends IP address]\sharename, but this method is very unsafe. Or, you could both buy a 3d party program like PCAnywhere that allows this type of access.
