My Default beep Sound option was missing too. You're solution fixed it.
I added a new user, logged in as that user, ran REGEDIT, exported
the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents subkey to a .reg file, logged
back in with the regular user account, double-clicked on the
new .reg file to merge the subkey, and the "default beep" was
back and working fine. I didn't even have to reboot.
