OK FOLKS! I fixed it.
Let me say, that I am not certain what caused it, but I am guessing it was the installation
of Adaptec Easy CD-creator. MS references bugs with this app screwing up the CD
rom drive.
I have a 2nd pc that I can use for cd burning, so what I am about to tell you may
not ensure getting EasyCD to work along with your CD drive. But I can at least tell
you how to get your CD drive back. Based on the except below from MS, I deleted
the upperfilters and lowerfilters reg keys under the reg path below. My CD rom came
back after reboot. As with all reg changes, be careful, make a backup...etc.
Method One
Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry
key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
