On XP you can recreate the default beeps with this registry entry. Type the following
into any text file called something .reg and double click it to import into the registry.

for example, the file beep.reg contains... (use the text between the dashed lines)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default]
"Default Beep"=""

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\.Current]
@="Windows XP Ding.WAV"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\.default]
@="Windows XP Ding.WAV"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

you can make the Windows XP Ding.WAV anything you want or just make it "" to at least
restore the sound event. Then use the control panel later to pick the sound you
want to use. The last entry in this file will be the entry used for the Windows
XP default scheme, so you should probably keep it as is in this example.
