HI BOYS AND GIRLS . WELL THE PROBLEM IS WINDOWS 2000 /PRO VERSION ETC USES A NT FILE SYTEM NOT THE FAT32 USED BY WINDOWS 95 SO YOU JUST CAN'T jump back to WIN 95 . THIS HERE IS FOR COMPAQ PRESARIO 4640 USERS PARTS APPLICABLE TO OTHER PCS LIKE HOW TO REFORMAT THE HARD DRIVE first you need 2 blank HD 1.4 MB diskettes a computer connected to the internet go here:http://www29.compaq.com/falco/sp_result.asp?Model=2714&Os=0 download the MODEM UPDATE SOFTPAQ AND THE ROMPAQ for the bios unto two separate floppies the ROMPAQ for the bios must be saved to the hard drive of the PC you are downloading with save to "MY BRIEFCASE" then insert a floppy and run that softpaq from "MY BRIEFCASE" so you now have an updated driver for the 56 k-DF modem and an updated bios on two floppies. good . see if there is a COMP USA store near to you run out buy a MAXTOR 30 GB hard drive about $80.00 open very carefully do not damage box take out the floppy and CD for the hard drive install insert both into your COMPAQ 4640 reboot and follow instructions to put your PC back to FAT32 .good .YOU can keep the hard drive you bought or return it with all the disks ,manuals etc pay a 15 % restocking fee or take a store credit do not open the hard drive anti static pack ok . or you can keep it if you wish FOR YOUR YARD SALE .SO NOW THE PC MUST BE LOADED BACK WITH WINDOWS 95 OK THEN INSTALL THE BIOS UPDATE AND THE MODEM SOFTPAQ 56K-DF DRIVER FROM THE TWO(2)FLOPPIES YOU MADE EARLIER THE COMPAQ PRESARIO WILL NOW RECOGNISE THE MODEM AT COM PORT 2 THATS COOL NOW TEST IT TO SEE IT CONNECTS TO THE INTERNET THEN LOAD WINDOWS 98 GET THE MICROSOFT WORKS 2002 SUITE AND LOAD IT ON TO THE 4640 AND THERE YOU GO YOU HAVE A PC WORKING AGAIN...I BOUGHT A 4640 FOR $100.00 THE BUTTON TO EXTRACT THE FLOPPY FROM THE "A" DRIVE WAS KICKED IN BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER IN FRUSTRATION IT HAD WINDOWS 2000 LOADED ON ...MODEM NOT FUNCTIONING ..THAT WAS MY FIX TO WINDOWS 98 ...I GUESS YOU CAN UPGRADE FROM THERE TO WIN 2000 BUT REMEMBER ITS ONLY A 4 GB HARD DRIVE ....HAVE FUN NSP for those who just want to uninstall windows 2000 using this metod wipes your hard drive ok CLEAN
