If you "hover"(Or right click?) over the "grayed out" "Show volume control on taskbar" checkmark, then click on the "what's this?" Windows tells you that it's "grayed out" because Windows volume control doesn't work with your particular system(Which is probably fine). Unfortunately, Windows doesn't tell you why then, the "Speaker Icon" is still showing...? Nor how to get rid of it...
