Had the same problem until I got a Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL router & 4port hub and hooked that straight to my modem. I run the Cat 5e cables straight to my router. As I use my Win 2K machine more than my XP, I ran setup for the router with my Win 2K. Now, I can access the internet from either machine whether either one is turned on or not. I had to play around with my settings so my machines would talk with each other, but that was no problem since it only took 5 minutes...
