Hey Neil,
If you have 2 sound devices on your machine, like you had one on board but bought
a Sound Card anyway, then win2k/XP will say the disabled built in sound is having
problems and won't start up. Don't worry about it, your PCI sound card should still
work fine.
However if you have no sound, and you don't know what kind of sound you have, here's
the way I would go about your problem. Look at the plugs along the back of your
computer, if the sound plugs, (speaker, lineout, and mic) are along the edge of the
case near your keyboard and mouse plugs, then you have onboard sound. In this case
you can find out what audio controller your computer uses (usually AC97) by either
looking in the manual that came with your motherboard / system, looking online to
see what the specs are for your system, or simply opening up the case, grabbing a
flashlight and seeing what the chip(s) near your sound plugs have written on them
(the most accurate way to know); also onboard sound may have come with your chipset,
(like nForce or 845G).
Case 2, your sound plugs appear in an expansion slot perpendicular to the motherbard.
You have a Sound Card, now you can find out what kind it is and get some drivers.
