Hi all,

First off, thanks to everyone who pondered my problem.

Andreas: Thanks for the tip. I tried it out, but unfortunately it didn't help in
my situation.

Jay: You got it! Turning off "PME Wake up" did the trick! I was quite surprised,
because I didn't think a BIOS change would do it. After all, I hadn't changed my
BIOS settings recently, so why should they be at fault (or so I thought)?

I think I have an idea of the root cause: I recently installed a wireless PCI LAN
card. I reckon that if this card is still getting signals from my Wireless Access
Point at shutdown, it will trigger the PME Wake Up feature, which will switch the
PC on again. At times when this happens, I always switch the PC off again straight
away, probably before the wireless PCI card has time to establish a connection with
the WAP. Thus during the second shutdown attempt, the PME Wake Up feautre is not
envoked, and the PC stays off. This would explain why I needed two shutdowns to
turn the PC off.

I could probably test my theory by turning PME Wake Up back on, and try turning off
my WAP before shutting down the PC. My guess is that with the wireless connection
broken, the wireless card would no longer trigger PME Wake Up, and my PC would stay
off. On the other hand, maybe I'll just let sleeping dogs lie....

Thanks again, everyone. Once again, Annoyances.org has solved my problem!

Michael
