I was able to speed up booting in my Windows 2000 PRO installations by defragging
the MFT. I've read that the defrag utility in Windows does not do this - you must
use a third party utility, (like Diskeeper). Both my desktop and laptop boot noticeably
faster now, (around 60 seconds).
On a related note, Shutdown times bogged down when I installed critical update Q329170.
As soon as I removed the update the shutdown times returned to normal.
