Successful ICS with WinPoET

I have managed to set up ICS over a network of XP and 2K machines, with WinPoET (v2.0.) The ISP is Verizon, in Washington, DC.

This is mostly from trial and error.

This assumes you've successfully installed WinPoET and can connect to the internet from the host, and that a LAN is set up which allows the host to see the clients.

Get to Network and Dial-up Connections. You should have 3 connections. One for the LAN, one for the NIC connected to the DSL modem, and the DSL modem connection itself. I label these LAN, DSL NIC, and WinPoET Connection.

Here are the setttings that work for me:

DSL NIC - Apply a 'dummy' static IP address here. (This is from the Verizon installation manual.) Go to the connection's Properties, and make sure in the General tab that only TCP/IP is checked. Under the TCP/IP Properties, use ip address 10.255.255.0, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Everything else is blank. Don't worry. Click OK. Go to the sharing tab, make sure the checkbox for sharing is unchecked. Click OK.

Under the LAN connection's Properties, I have everything checked. Client for MS Networks, File and Printer Sharing, NetBEUI, and TCP/IP are all checked. You may not need all of these. The TCP/IP settings here will be modified automatically when ICS is enabled on the WinPoET Connection (which is the next step.) Under the Sharing tab, make sure the checkbox is unchecked. Click OK.

Go to the WinPoET Connection Properties. Only one thing here: Click on the Sharing tab, check the "Enable Internet Connection Sharing..." checkbox. Make sure the 'For local network:' dropdown lists the LAN connection, not the DSL NIC connection.

Restart if you need to, and restart the client machines. All the clients need is TCP/IP set to obtain IP and DNS information automatically.

Good luck! Hope this helps some people.
