Thanks for your reply....
I stumbled upon the solution by closely examining one of my other PC running the
same op system W2K....
I know Marlett is esstential to Win 98 but wasnt sure about
W2K. I had installed it but it clobbered all the system fonts which are used in messages
like " Installing network preferences" and a zillion other places turning them into
something like Chinese. Uninstalling Marlett made the
"Caption Buttons" the three like icons in the upper right corner of every window
totally illegible.
I finally noticed that Marlett.ttf has to set as a HIDDEN file
in the attribbutes part of Properties, then it works without
appearing all over the place.
Yr right Microsoft is no help at all on this subject
