to answer jim's question about having the computer come on as soon as power is given
to it (the switch on the power bar being pressed) this is a BIOS issue. on 2 of my
computers (from a few years ago) i found the setting but if i remember correctly
it's not on my newest computer (7 months old) but just look and see if you have it.
it should be something like What to do when AC power is restored, and you can have
it 1. stay off, 2. turn on, or 3. go to the last state it was in when power was removed.
for example if you have no power bar (or simply never use the switch on it) and then
its late one night and the computer's off and then there's a power outage from a
storm or whatever, and power is removed from the computer for a little while, and
then when the blackout is over power is restored, you DON'T want your computer to
come on right? so option 2 would be no good. however if you use a switch of some
sort (power bar, etc) and when the computer's not in use the switch is always off,
then option 2 is perfect for you so when power is restored (switch goes on) the computer
starts right up and you don't need to reach down to the button on the tower.
as for the computer powering down as soon as you shut it down....why is that bad?
just turn off the power bar as soon as it's all powered down and you'll be fine.
