windows 2000 and windows xp have an issue with the dns client service where if an
abnormally large 'hosts' file is used (mine was around 500KB), services.exe will
exhibit high processor usage. the fix for this problem is to either not use the hosts
file, or to disable the dns client service (which is pretty much useless anyway).
to do the latter, hit start -> run, type in services.msc and hit enter (or
right-click on my computer, hit manage, select services). in the right pane,
scroll down until you find the dns client service, right-click on it, select stop.
after it is stopped, right-click on it again and hit properties, and in the startup
type section of the general tab, select disable, ok your way out, and
restart.
if you're interested in disabling more services, here's a pretty good guide: blkviper.com
- windows 2000 service configuration guide (also blkviper.com
- windows xp service configuration guide)
