There's been a number of questions lately regarding sharing the internet between 2 machines. This can be extremely frustrating as I have been down that road as well. One has access (the host) while the client has problems. I, too, went through the list of things needed to be done to secure a connection to the client and ended up scratching my head trying to figure out what kept going wrong. The solution to the problem was to purchase a router. Setting it up and getting both machines online took about a half-hour. The particular model I got was the SMC 7004ABR. This one features the standard 4 LAN ports, a printer port (which also solved the problem I was having with sharing it), and a 9-pin serial connection for a backup external modem. I also have PPPoE now and all I needed to do to configure this was enter the router management software, enter the username, password, and servicename. No screwing with the machines as they receive their IP's from the router, not the ISP. Didn't want to write a novel here but that router was the best $60 bucks I've ever spent on computer equipment. And you don't have to stick with that model, either. Linksys also makes pretty good routers as well so shop around. There's the whole wireless thing too, though I'm pretty good at hiding the wires that they don't bother me at all.
