I have had the same problem (I have a Soundblaster from Creative). I did not get
any errors, rei-installed all sound drivers but have no speaker symbol in the taskbar
and also do not have any sound. I could solve this problem with the device Manager.
At the Audio controller there had been listed only two entries: Creative Gameport
Joystick and Creative Soundblaster Audio. But there has to be a Legacy driver too
(in my case Sound Blaster AudioPCI 128 Legacy Driver). This third entry I got through
going to the properties(settings) of the "Creative Sound Blaster...". The driver
section showed, that I used drivers from Windows. I chose change driver and choosed
the option "use from disk" and chose the original driver from my sound card. Then
WindowsMe prompted that this driver is not tested and signed by Microsoft. I clicked
the warning away and had sound...!
