empty sys event logs - why?

I think that my event logging system stopped working. The sys, app and security logs are completely empty, whereas they used to be full of messages. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot it? I thought about a missing service, but the obvious ones are running (COM+ event system, event log, alerter)...
