Thanks, it fixed now! On a slight variation to your suggestion, I used the "computer management" console "%WINDIR%\system32\compmgmt.msc /s" to simply clear the empty log files (right-click on the log filename). I guess this recreated the logs on the hard disk and everything restarted.
