Check to make certain that you didn't accidently begin to rename a desktop item. You may have clicked the text portion of a desktop shortcut which would trigger a "rename me" function. It has been decided before the dawn of time that Windows will do nothing until the renaming is complete. Recheck desktop icons text for a blank field.
