Open a batch file- command prompt comes up for a short flash

When I open a batch file (.bat) in explorer, the Command Prompt will pop up for only a split second. As soon as it is finished running the batch file, it closes. This makes for very difficult diagnostics, since I can't see the result of the .bat file when the command prompt closes. Is there any way to keep it from just flashing and disappearing, and make the command prompt stay open? (I tried editing the properties of a shortcut going to the batch file, but nothing worked.)
