I used all of the methods described on this page and none worked - at best I saw
limited success.
I did, however, get back my true color icons after some digging, and thought I should
post the rather unusual solution here for others.
Note that what I describe applies to systems with nVidia video cards. However, the
issue here is if you are displaying wallpaper on both desktops - don't! You must
select to display wallpaper on one desktop only.
My system:
-two monitors
-dual-head video card (NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200)
-windows 2000 pro
Solution:
1 Right-click the desktop and select nView Properties.
2 Select the Desktops tab.
3 Click Properties.
4 "Allow different wallpapers per monitor" will be selected. Leave it selected. Highlight
monitor 2 and click the Clear button. This leaves only monitor 1 displaying wallpaper.
5 Reboot the PC.
6 The icons will display at the color setting of your choice.
