This is so ****ed irritating. I tracked down the source in XP to C:\WINNT\System32\shimgvw.dll.

Use the same technique to unregister listed in the other postings or, what I have done is less elegant but more easily remembered and reversed is to, in order:

1. rename C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache\shimgvw.dll to C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache\shimgvw.dll.XXX

2. rename C:\WINNT\System32\shimgvw.dll to C:\WINNT\System32\shimgvw.dll.XXX

The order is important, because if you rename the file in System32 first, the the file protect automation will replace it before you can rename the cached version.

NOW, does anyone know how to make the default view NOT be thumbnails?
