Customer Installed WRONG CD (win 2000) thus killing windows xp

My customer CLAIMS he installed grabbed the wrong CD and managed to install Windows 
2000 - thus wiping out Windows XP. There are no traces of Windows XP that I can find 
on this computer. How do I verify his story? On booting up, the menu says there is 
only ONE operating system W2K. Now, I can read the activation key (using Jellybean) 
- but can you tell by the key if this was originally a Windows XP O/S ? please respond
