I had the same problem. This Microsoft KB article seemed to hold the key to the solution : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q257592. I finally found the (unwanted) modified file extension at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\ and deleted it.. Phew!
