I created a batch file like you said and ran it and when I tried to create a quicklaunch toolbar, it actually did it with the show desktop icon. I restarted the computer and everything seems to be working properly. I have added Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to the quicklaunch and everything seems to be working fine. Congratulations on sticking with it and finding a solution.
