I had similar problems. Upgraded to XP, installed and unistalled software including
RealPlayer and LimeWire and changed houses. Suddenly I realized I had no sound.
The computer said the device was working correctly (my SoundBlaster Live! Value).
That sound card was an upgrade when I bought my Micron PC; it's in a PCI slot. Micron
disabled the sound built into the motherboard but didn't remove or cover the jacks.
I spent about 4 very frustrating hours until I realized I was correctly using the
incorrect jacks! Oh well, I've got the fresh drivers at least. More good information
in the MS Knowledge Base:

Thanks for the other ideas here.
