well I also got the same error and spent a day so hope my solution helps someone.
In my case I wasnt even able to get to logon screen, it was freezing right at the
start and recovery console didnt work either but I was able to boot and save all
the data in the end so keep reading...
What happened to me was - after merging partitons and rebooting there was no drive
letter assigned so that was holding me from booting - I used partition magic rescue
disks and created another partition and installed a fresh copy of xp (obviously no
need to do that if you already have a working one). I couldnt solve the problem with
partition magic so I installed Acronis Partition Expert and assigned a letter to
the problem drive (any unused letter would do I guess) and then configured bootmagic
to start on that one and it worked. Everything seems to be in place and working ok
