I can confirm that having too large of a hosts file can cause this behavior on dial-up
connections. I use Spybot Search & Destroy's "immunize" feature to protect
from spyware. What this feature does is place tons on entries in your hosts file,
which points known spyware sites to the loopback address (127.0.0.1), so they can't
grab data from the internet. My hosts file was over 300K.I'm going to write them
an email stating they release a "lite" version of their immunization file. Thanks
