I get this problem every weeks or two, and the only way I've found to get everything
working agin is to (in "Hardware") delete/uninstall any sound cards you might have
installed, then do a search for "New Hardware". As far as I can tell my problem
is because I have an on-board sound card that died and I installed another sound
card, so they have a tendency to screw things up (even when they both claim to be
"working properly" and have "no conflicts").
Anyway, this has worked for me EVERY time this happens.
