Do this CTRL-ALT-DEL and run the TaskMrg. and see if you have a program running and
taking all the ram..
It can be a worm or a vrus running in the background..
Check the Perf.Folder to see if the CPU is running higher than 10% all the time..if
so you have a program running and it can slow down you machine big time..
because your machine is a PIII 1gig with a default of 256 ram it will not take much
to slow it down..
You can do a online scan for a vruse that will help pin it down...but it can take
a bit of time on line to do it..
Goto this link and it will list many programs you can download to check it..

IF You Use IE read this URL for sure, see below

You can also download Service Controller,it will let you turn OFF items so it will
run faster..and boot up faster.
Download Service Controller
From:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4313.html
Service Controller XP is a handy interface that allows you to control your Windows
(NT/2000/XP) services. You can instantly see which ones are running and view detailed
information about all the standard Windows services. In addition, the program provides
information that lets you decide whether to enable or disable a service. It prevents
you from accidentally disabling critical operating system services and suggest whether
to disable a service or not based on the use of your computer (e.g. Default, Gaming,
Internet Gateway etc.)
Also check on this web page for items that are running. or set to run
