It sounds like your XP got clobbered.
I believe your scheme won't work anyway. I think all users share the same screen
resolution. But I could be wrong.
There's another way to add a user but I doubt it will work any better than your way.
Right click on My Computer. Click Manage > System Tools > Local Users and Groups
> Users. Then click Action > New User.
