Am workng through a similar probelm on a W2K box. The primary C:\ partition of 15gb
has failed but the other two partitions are in good order. Here's what's been tried
so far;

FDISK /MBR = The command executed but failed to effect the problem.

Ran Easy Recovery on the partition and it indicated there was no physical problem
with the hardware.

Partition Magic 8 (from Floppy) gave an Error #91 followed by an Error #87. Attempting
the same load from a boot CD gave the same results.

Windows Resuce Boot Floppy failed with a less than memorable message.

Windows repair utility from the OS CD failed to find the drive. Repair Console commands
are being reserched to see determine repair options.

Am now moving files off of the two other (good)partitions on the drive before proceeding
with the repairs.

Most of the repair tools used can be found at http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ or hirensbootcd.

Once file retreival has been achieved, the drive will be reimaged from a drive image
made a little over a month ago. And would have been do it i had made a copy of one
directory there is no copy of and the user profile.

Hope this helps somebody out.

Best Advice: Make drive images often and use a live backup application like Datakeeper.
  I didn't and so far its cost me 8 hours.
