I was having the same problem every couple of days (lose sound except for windows
"chimes"). Although my motherboard never had an on-board card, and i've always used
Soundblaster cards. I can temporarly fix the problem by installing a third party
driver for my card. When the problem comes back I install the windows driver or
the Creative Labs driver with patches. The problem always comes back though and
I have yet to find a permanent solution.
