I was having the same problem every couple of days (lose sound except for windows "chimes"). Although my motherboard never had an on-board card, and i've always used Soundblaster cards. I can temporarly fix the problem by installing a third party driver for my card. When the problem comes back I install the windows driver or the Creative Labs driver with patches. The problem always comes back though and I have yet to find a permanent solution.
