Replicated Icons on Desktop

All of my current desktop items (with the exception of IE and My Computer) are doubling
up - there are inexplicably TWO of each. I went into /Documents and Settings/[profile
name]/Desktop, and there is nothing there. All of my current desktop items are under
/Documents and Settings/All Users/Desktop currently. Any new shortcuts I attempt
to make on the desktop automatically replicate. Shortcuts I create elsewhere are
fine.

So let's say I have icon A of Firefox and icon B of Firefox - they look identical
and they seem to reside in, and be pointing to, the same place (respectively.) If
I delete icon A, icon B is automatically deleted. If I delete icon B, icon A stays
on the desktop, but loses all its attributes.

Interestingly, if I select all the icons and their copies and cut-and-paste them
into a folder NOT on the desktop, only ONE icon appears in the folder.

SO what the heck is going on here? Any help would be appreciated - this is driving
me insane.
