re-internet sharing

What are the alternatives to connecting to the internet with my laptop running XP
and my PC Windows 2000. I have a non-wireless broadband connection presently on the
PC win2000. Is setting up a router the only way round it since my created network
diskette from XP comes up as "incompatible with windows 2000", What other ways please.
