Weird (?) local area network problem

I am trying to establish a network connection between two Win 2000 laptops using
a crossover cable. One of the computers recognizes the cable and tries to send packets.
The other one doesn't recognize the cable, and doesn't receive the packets sent by
the first computer.
I believe that the cable is not broken, because I remember having this kind of a
problem with these two computers earlier too, and managing to solve it. I just cannot
figure out how I did it.
Both computers' network cards are capable of forming internet connection, so I guess
the cards are not the issue either.
Any help would be appreciated. Also please note that I'm a bit of a newbie with networking,
so do not assume me to understand all the basics.
