Because the Dell Laptops have very proprietary hardware and need very proprietary
software driver to get them to work in win2k.

The easy way is to download a free software program that will give you that info
so you can download the RIGHT driver and then update your driver so it can work.
Download aida32 from : see below
---------------------
Once you have install aida32 write down the info for your sound device and take that
info to driverguide.com and get the driver for it..
Print out the info you need ,it must be the right driver for your sound device and
win2k.
-----------------------------
You can also use the system info to get the right driver.
It takes a bit of work .
Start/Programs/Acc./System Info/Hardware/Components/Multimedia/Sound Device/ it should
be listed as a Crystal WDM with a cwawdm.sys driver for most Dell 600 laptops but
it can be anything ,but you need to check it for sure.

BELOW......
Aida32 - Enterprise System Information 3.93

Size: 3.1Mb
This is the one I like , It will show you YOUR
CD Prouct ID Numbers and other SN#,of software you have installed on your machine...so
you can print them out for safe keeping...
Just click on Software item (on the left) and then right click on the items on the
right and select copy and then open NotePad and paste it in and print it out and
put one with YOUR win2k cd...

Personal System Information 3.93

Size: 2.9 Mb

Plus more below

unzip it to C:\Aida32 and then run the aida32.exe to run the program
Start/Run c:\Aida32\aida32.exe

New ver. of aida32 called Everest Home Edition
It has a installer and uninstaller with it..
from below:

Plus get drivers from and check your hardware
Windows Catalog and HCL

Good Luck
Have a good one
