Desktop keeps reloading

Bought a cheap, second-hand Dell from a guy with 98SE installed. Encountered a number of minor problems (kernel32.dll errors, etc), so I upgraded to win2000 pro. I skipped the "clean install" option because I wanted to keep/save some of the old programs, like Office 2000. Anyway, the chief problem is that the desktop keeps reloading for no apparent reason. I don't get an error message when this happens. It just quickly reloads and goes back to normal. But it happens every few minutes, which is unbelievably annoying. Any clues or advice for troubleshooting this? Thanks.
