Goto Maxtor web site and down load the Diag.tool to check the HD.
Sounds like the fat table got nailed or the partation on the 2nd  drive letter.
You could try the fix/mbr it's a long shot.
Use the recovery console for  fix/mbr
consistency=
A transaction preserves the consistency of data, transforming one consistent state 
of data into another consistent state of data. 
Data bound by a transaction must be semantically preserved
