Just a QUESTION or two..
1. Have you checked the HD for the files off the win2k cd.
Sometimes they will copy the files from the win2k cd on to the HD for a backup.
If so you can copy them to a boot cd..(from a ISO file that you can make with the
SP4 in place)

2. Have you use the backup tool in win2k if not you should b/4 you do any upgrades
plus use this tool also.
ERUNT The Emergency Recovery Utility NT
AND
NTREGOPT NT Registry Optimizer
ERUNT=Registry Backup and Restore for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP

Win2k has a hard time with the SAM hive when it backs it up this tool will do it
right.
Then once you have all the safe guards in place then do your upgrades and install
your new programs.
Besure to backup your machine after you have all the programs up and running...
Good luck with your new Laptop.
one more note *** because you don't have the recovery cd you may want to check this
out and get one for your laptop, you will need it some day.
