User profiles changing

I have w2000 Pro on an office PC and there has been some staff changes and I want
to change the user name to reflect the new user. However, I want to keep the desktop
,programs etc etc exactly as it was for the previous user. I tried just changing
the user name, but the profile seemed lost although I could see the prev user folder
under Docs & Sett. How can I retrieve that profile and how do I change user names
without losing everything from the prev user.
