Found the reg keys as follows.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotice     
-set at 1 change to 0

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotice   - 
set at 1 change to 0

Changing these got rid of the update icon.
