Unable to access Windows Updates

Hi,
My W2K PC was setup to automatically prompt me to install the latest windows update.
I noticed that I had not been prompted in the last couple of months. I attempted
to go the Windows Update page and check for updates manually. Unfortunately, it will
not connect to the site: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A Internet Explorer
window opens but it just hangs and does not connect.
I use Spybot regularly for spyware and I have Avast! version 4.6 home edition for
virus software and I use Firewall X-treme by Stomp Soft. I have turned all 3 off
and attempted to connect to the windows update page but without success.
Any Ideas? Thanks!
