Password protection for a folder

I want to be able to file away text and or pictures in a folder on my desk top but
I want to restrict this folder to being able to be opened only by me to access the
data in the folder such as acct info or other passwords or pin numbers and even pictures
of items. I tried a programcalled PGP but it is so technical and difficult to use
for a novice like me that it is almost useless for a simple application. I clicked
on the properties function and opened the sharing tab and it has a whole bunch of
granted access to all sorts of people but I dont see how I could configure controlled
access to one named folder. Of course I would prefer that the procedure be available
without having to buy yet another program (in other words is there a freebe out there?)
