Windows 2000 boot problems

Whenever my Windows 2000 Professional, Sp 4
restarts or cold boots, it now installs a backup, erasing (or relocating) the My
Documents folder--among other things. The event log is crammed with numerous error
messages and alerts, casting suspicion on the hard disk.
Would a registry editer/cleaner software help?
Should I tango with the ERD disk?
Should I reformat the hard drive?
Should I just quit and go home?
Please Advise.
