Contrary to what Microsoft says, having Automatic Updates on is not a good idea, 
at least for people who don't mind spending a little time maintaining their computers. 
The problem with getting several updates simultaneously is that some of them are 
duplicates,  or one of the many may not agree with your pc, and you don't know which 
one.
For the problem at hand, try this: look under Add/Remove programs (in Control Panel) 
for a fix containg the id KB823353. If you find it, uninstall. Then go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en
enter KB823353 as search string, download the file, and run it. Being outside the 
update mechanism it should work.
You may also search MS knowledge base for problems with installing updates.
