M$ is M$ and it wants to see IE running on your machine.
If not why would you want the update items.
Check to make sure your cookies are set right MS needs to read your machine and place 
a cookie on it .
Also check your InertNet security setting in IE they need to be low so windows can 
get in.
Also if you are using a FireWall check your setting also.
