adrian, your advice seemed to work, perfectly. thanks, my update problems are no
more, at least for the time being. I've kept automatic updates on, but set it to
the option not to download and install, but rather just to notify me of critical
updates. hopefully this, coupled with your advice should prevent further update
problems....
