I had the same problem as James, where on bootup it would freeze up at the blue welcome
screen showing only the windows xp logo. I tried replacing the ntldr and ntdetect.com
files and playing around with the boot.ini file through bootcfg, but all to no avail.
It turned out to be a problem with the master boot record (MBR). I used the software
that came with my Western Digital hard drive (WD Data Lifeguard Tools) to first make
a backup of my MBR, and then update it. Whatever the problem was, it was fixed by
doing this. I believe you can also do this using the fixmbr command in the windows
recovery console, but I've never tried that, and I don't think that offers a way
to make a backup just in case the fix doesn't work, so be careful. Hope this helps
someone so they don't have to waste 2 days trying to fix it like me!
